To say that this home was a labor of love is an understatement. We have never been more hands on with a project, from demo to laying ram board, our efforts were fully into this home.
After a year on Shem Creek, we found this house in the historic Old Village of Mount Pleasant that had been sitting on the market for a year. We decided to transform it into something more modern and unique. Most of the Old Village is done in a coastal style, a lot of the homes are white with a metal roof. We wanted to do something different, so we painted the exterior a grayish/black. The color is Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, with Tricorn Black on the windows and door. We painted the windows and doors while we awaited approval from the historical commission on design. With the wait time plus the delays on materials due to COVID, we were never able to replace the doors and windows before we listed the home. The plan was for a double French steel door with casement windows throughout.
The roof was one of the first items we addressed, using DaVinci Roofscapes – a composite material that looks just like a natural material but comes along with a lifetime warranty. We have always wanted to do a DaVinci roof, and I was thrilled that we finally made it happen on this project.
We selected the DaVinci Select Shake in the Mountain blend. Another positive about this product is that you don’t have to wait for the shake to age to get that great, dark color. The material comes in the ideal shade and will always look amazing.

We attempted to open up the home as much as we could, but keep the interior dark and moody. The entry hallway was painted Sherwin Williams Dark Olive. Can you spot Gina posing for the listing photo?

Gallery walls are everywhere in this home. Below is a custom painting by Kim Hassold. The antlers are from We Took to the Woods, and the bottom painting is by Ronald Jackson – one of my favorite new artists.

In the sitting room, I wanted to transform the fireplace, and artist Emily Pope Harris went to work on the plaster-like finish. We put up dry wall on all four sides to give her a blank canvas. The centerpiece is a commissioned ‘Scuba Girl’ by artist Carlisle Burch. Light fixture via Dhier Home.

The other side of the fireplace, the back living room, was set to be more of a den and TV room. The color of the walls is Sherwin Williams Studio Clay, and it’s finished off with abstract artwork by Whitney Stoddard and Selfie by Eric Knight via Dhier Home.

I knew I wanted this kitchen to be all black. We went with a minimal cabinet from Charleston Cabinets, and Et Marquina countertops.

The stairway was the perfect place to relocate my Hermès scarves. This little landing with the chaise lounge has the slightest view of the harbor. The sunset over the water was always stunning.

Sterling’s bathroom was bound to be funky. I was so sad to leave her butt bathroom in the last house, so I reenlisted artist Carrie Beth Waghorn to create an Insta-worthy tub. Using marine paint, she went to work. The bathroom was finished off with tile from Circles & Squares.

The guest room was our little surfers haven, with this funky light fixture and bed from Dhier Home. The color on the walls is Sherwin Williams Verde Marrón, with photography by Cameron Wilder and paddle out for BLM by Billy Watts.

Our bedroom started as two, and we took down half of a wall to create my office and closet. We kept the bathroom the same size, but gutted the contents to match our dark and moody aesthetic. It’s finished off with artwork and linens from Dhier Home. We went back to the Sherwin Williams Studio Clay in the bedroom, and Alabaster White in the closet, with hand painted wallpaper by Carrie Beth Waghorn.

Sterling’s nursery was my favorite room, with wallpaper by Dorothy Shain and our signature light fixture from Dhier Home. The artwork ranged from vintage Babar prints, to the Cat in the Hat purchased from the Dr. Seuss gallery in La Jolla during her transfer. The Moroccan rug is from this amazing Etsy shop.

There was so much joy in styling this moody and dark home. Lots of memories made here.
Thanks to Lacey Toney Photography for shooting!
